New Horizons for Scholarly Communication in Ukraine

On July 8, 2026, the round table “Development of Scholarly Communication in Ukraine: Publication Ethics, Journal Quality, and Integration into the European Research Area” successfully brought together editors, publishers, and academic leaders. Organized by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) Ukraine, this pivotal event focused on aligning national editorial standards with international benchmarks, promoting Open Science, and protecting the domestic research ecosystem from predatory publishing practices.

The program featured high-level insights from leading global organizations, including COPE and DOAJ, as well as Ukrainian policymakers and quality assurance bodies. Artem Artyukhov, Head of the Ukrainian Research Integrity Office and Head of the Ethics Committee at the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, delivered a talk “Scientific journals and academic integrity policy”, addressing the crucial role of robust ethics policies in elevating the credibility of Ukrainian scientific publications.

Looking ahead, the round table laid the groundwork for systemic reforms, including the upcoming September launch of a national training and certification program for editors-in-chief and editorial board members. By supporting the development of a formal “Scholarly Editor” professional standard and refining journal indexing requirements, this initiative marks a massive leap forward in integrating Ukraine’s research community into the European scientific landscape.
